Skied at Zoa on Wednesday. Wow, what a difference 2 m of recent snow makes!!! The work crews are still working on clearing up the highway, with many sections with still only a single lane in each direction.
No fresh tracks up there, only some old tracks (from Sunday or Monday) low down. Generally excellent skiing on good powder, except on S facing slopes that were affected by the end of the day -- expect a thin sun crust. A few small naturals were visible high on Thar (E-NE), on the steep slopes 40-50 deg. Dug a pit near top of Zoa NE aspect, extended column, CTM-15 about 20cm down, Q2 (mostly planar but did not slide), did not propagate to extended block, no other results. Wind-affected near the top of ridge, low-density powder on N aspect lower down. We skied moderate, well-supported lines. No whumfing or cracking.
Went back on Friday. Mixed conditions. Moderate to strong winds at top. Looks like Thursday was very warm up there with anything with solar radiation having developed a crust that didn't soften on Friday. Skiing was very good on some of the lines on the N side. Skied slightly steeper lines with no cracking or whumfing. Skiing down the pipeline right of way road was terrible... choose your poison: breakable crust or trashed snow by snowmobiles! The Coq is a bit busier this weekend with the ACC SnowFest being on.
