We're planning to go up to Elfin Lakes shelter on Monday (13th Feb).

Has any-one been there lately and can tell us if we need snowshoes?

Dan, you will need snow shoes. You might be able to make it there without them. In Feb there are meters of snow and a well trodden track to the cabin. I have not been to Elfin in a long while. I would not try to get there without snowshoes.
