Mentor-ship Mountaineering Program Option #1

Aims and Goals

The B.C.M.C. members that would be targeted in option one of the Advanced Mentorship Mountaineering Program (AMMP) would be members with a strong passion towards rock climbing and mountaineering with a very basic technical skill set and varying experience. The courses included in option #1 are beginner and intermediate level technical courses meant to focus on the influx of new beginner members so this might grasp those that have an interest towards leading volunteer taught instructional courses. This would also appeal towards pre-existing members with beginner, intermediate, and advanced climbing ability but with lower level technical training that are interested but haven’t found a comprehensive guideline on what is required to teach volunteer instructional courses. These members would be taught these technical abilities during the program courses with a weeklong camp at the end that is more focused on how be a good instructor of the courses. Members that have completed the program would have access to the club curriculum and would be expected to teach from the curriculum related to each specific course they may choose so to teach.

Incentives

Accepted applicants would benefit from a number of immediate and continual incentives to interest members to keep instructing volunteer courses. The incentives would include:

1.     %50 off the original priced B.C.M.C. course costs for the duration of the program.

2.     A free leader-ship camp.

3.     Continual benefits from the B.C.M.C. Recognition Program.

4.     Special access to the B.CM.C. course curriculum.

5.     A great feeling of accomplishment and pay-it-forward.

Application Process & Pre-requisites

The applications process towards the program has 2 access points depending on whether members feel they are fit to start the program at the intermediate level technical courses or start from the beginning at the beginner level courses. There will be a maximum of 10 applicants accepted into the program. Upon the possibility that 10 applicants are accepted into the beginner level technical courses but there are a number of applicants that have applied and are qualified to start the program at the intermediate level course a second leader will be sought out to assist in the teaching of intermediate courses. Pre-requisites for the intermediate level course is yet to be determined. Pre-requisites for members applying to start at the beginner level courses are:

1.     Must be an active member (have been on two trips) of the B.C.M.C.

2.     Physically fit.

3.     Experience in rock climbing and mountaineering with required equipment.

The application process involves 4 steps:

1.     Completion of the B.C.M.C. Partner List with detailed completion of information related to your climbing ability, fitness level, previous completed routes, planned vacation trips, and all personal info.

2.     A letter of interest towards the program detailing your interest of becoming a volunteer B.C.M.C. course instructor with any info on any previous technical training and knowledge you have. You may request to start the program at the intermediate level courses.

3.     A short phone call to go over your application and the applicant’s summer availability to teach 2 courses after completion of the program.

4.     Your acceptance/declined application response via e-mail.

Calendar Strategy

The program would be made up of 9 courses. The 9 courses would be completed from the start of May 4th to June 30th, shown in the attached calendar. The next part of the program consists of a week-long camp aimed at first teaching members how to lead courses while being a better teachers, and second, some developing of mountaineering skills. The camp is 5-7 days long and would be completed in the month of July. It is expected that each applicant organize and post the 2 courses they plan on teaching on the trips list and choose the dates but assistance with be available from the program manager.

Pricing

In order to attract passionate, dedicated individuals the initial program courses would come at a cost of %50 off what the B.C.M.C. would normally charge for the courses but for those that have been accepted to the program and completed instructing 2 courses during the same summer before October 2014, they would be reimbursed the costs of the courses. Accepted applicants would be allowed to go on the weeklong camp in July for free. The costs for the courses would be required to be paid upon acceptance into the program. Each course would come at a cost of $25 for a total of $225 that would have to be paid in full.

Monitoring

All instructors would be monitored and reviewed after completion AMMP for every course they choose to teach. The instructors would be monitored by the use comment cards for participants at the end of each course. These comment cards would be collected into an envelope and mailed to the program manager. The cards would ask a few questions with a couple lines for comments at the end.

Opinions on each topic would be much appreciated!
