Hurley Silvermine, East of Common Johnny Creek

Adrien, Alex, and myself did an exploration on Hurley Silvermine. We explored the ridges to the East of Common Johnny Creek in the Cayoosh range. The parking was on the north side of the Duffey Lake Road at a gravel pullout just past the Blowdown road. Cayoosh Creek is crossed by a footbridge.

Just over the bridge, a right fork leads to a First Nations protest camp. We took the left fork that was taken over by the alders. After the first switchback, there was a remains of a burned bridge but the creek crossing was easy. We spent hours traveling through alder tunnels for 5km on our skis. Past the cutblock, it was fairly easy traveling to the alpine bowl on the North side of Peak 7500. We pitched our tent there and spent the night very cold.

We packed out the next morning and headed out to the ridge of Common Johnny Creek, just above Duffey Lake. Amazing views in all directions from the Stein and Joffre on the South to Barkley Valley and Whitecap and further peaks in the Bendor range.

We skied down on the bowl of Peak 7400 back to the cutblock , and re-traced our route back to the logging road. We carried our skis on our pack and hiked back to the car.

1 thing that I always wanted to do was try to go along that rugged looking ridge to the north of Duffy Lake.  And even before that, a long time ago I was able to drive where you went and the road was in fairly good shape at that time.

So some years ago Alena Dzujkova and I parked at the Mt Rohr parking area and did a 4 day traverse from west to east along that ridge to where you entered and left. We saw 1 grizzly in the Common Johnny drainage. And yes, coming out the alder was horrific!

Thanks for the info, David. This will be my summer trip, a traverse from Downton to Marriott
