Hey everyone,
Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but thought that some of you would be interested in being aware. This thread on clubtread caught my eye earlier today: http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=57146. Essentially, Google is looking to map the world's trails and get complete walkthroughs of the trails captured for street view, as is explained on their site here: http://google-latlong.blogspot.ca/2013/06/apply-now-to-be-next-google-maps-trekker.html
I'm not sure what I think about capturing walkthroughs of trails to such detail as it seems like it would reduce the adventure of exploring somewhere new to have a step by step guide available. Perhaps they'll limit themselves to easy trails, and not more interesting routes and leave a bit of the mystery for us to discover ourselves
On another note, the clubtread post mentioned that the poster was going to see if the ACC would apply to do this work for google... is it something that the BCMC should in any way be involved in?
I think it's a great idea for those that wish to see the trail beforehand *and* for those that can't take some trails but would still like to enjoy the visual experience. As for those that don't want to know beforehand what lays around the next bend in the trail... don't watch them.
