Does anyone know the circumstances surrounding this? What sort of group, etc? Terrible.

Drew is reporting on ClubTread that the 3 were climbing the central couloir on Joffre's north face. They were roped together and fell 2000 feet. Very sad news.

Very tragic! Wonder whether their pro blew out or if they were "soloing" roped-up.

A very sad day in our mountaineering community.  My condolences to the families for this tragic loss.  My hopes that they can find solace in knowing that their loved ones were pursuing life to its fullest.  Ships are safe at harbour, but that is not what ships are made for.

The Edge in North Van is hosting a fundraiser for Elena's two children and husband on Friday (this is on the club trip list) .
The following is from their Facebook page:
"Join us on Friday Jan 16th as we raise funds for the husband and children of Elena Cernicka, who tragically passed away in an accident on Joffre Peak this past weekend. 100% of the proceeds from the daypasses will go directly to her husband and two little boys. She was a big part of our Edge family and we encourage everyone, even those in our extended climbing family, to come in and support our cause."

My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of Steph, Neil and Elena.
