Hello BCMCers,
Backcountry BC (https://backcountrybc.ca) is the now the Province's first grassroots, decentralized provincial advocacy platform for the non-motorized backcountry recreation community. Everyone is welcome to post on the website and use it and its content/data for free.
In January 2018, the BCMC Executive voted to adopt Backcountry BC as its advocacy platform and to pay for the ongoing web hosting.
History
In 2015, Paul Kubik and I created the website and organization Garibaldi Park 2020 for the purpose of defending Garibaldi Park from commercial interests, industry and government. We were able to win several key and important victories. Inspired by those successes, we began receiving requests to tackle issues outside of Garibaldi Park. Soon, Garibaldi Park 2020 was dealing with issues in other parks such as Cypress Provincial Park, Pinecone-Burke, and Vancouver Island issues. We realized that there was a huge void and a need for a true provincial advocacy website and platform and that the Garibaldi Park 2020 website would have to replaced with a much more powerful and expandable provincial website; built from the ground up.
Between the Summer of 2017 and January 2018, Bill Maurer and I spent countless hours building and launching a new mega-provincial advocacy website for the backcountry recreation community. Just as was the case with garibaldipark2020.com, the costs associated with the construction of this new mega-site were paid for out of my own pocket.
In addition to just advocacy, Backcountry BC also contains a powerful, modern provincial trail database component, trip reporting system, and trip planning resources such as weather, GPS tools, mapping tools, Avalanche forecasting, etc. It also has a front end document library for the storage of any kind of file, map or data for the purpose of advocacy and information preservation and documentation.
Backcountry BC is now owned by the BCMC and managed by the BCMC Web Team
I am happy to answer any questions in this thread that you may have about the new site, or the journey and advocacy work that led us to making this dream a reality.
