Description:

Map navigation and route finding are some of the skills that any outdoor enthusiast venturing beyond official trails should master at some point.? This course will provide you with tools needed to safely navigate in the terrain so that you are no longer confined to following hiking trails and can plan your own backcountry adventures.

You will learn how to read a map, work with compass and GPS and how to apply the knowledge in the terrain.


Course Curriculum:

THEORY SESSION:
Maps
- grid system
- scale
- reading contours
- declination, datum, projection

Compass
- magnetic vs. true north
- bearings
- triangulation


Altimeter (barometric)
- calibration; usage

GPS
- UTM coordinates & GPS
- datum & GPS
- waypoints
- bread crumb trail (track log)


FIELD WORK:
Route finding
Reading terrain
Pitfalls of the low route
Avoiding bush
Map vs. microterrain
