Trip Description

Trip objectives:

An early autumn, week-long, hiking/scrambling trip in Tsylos (Chilko Lake) Provincial Park. Spectrum Pass (2250 m. el.) is a long days hike up the scenic and wildlife rich Tchaikazan valley. High but easy scrambling peaks in the vicinity of the pass include the volcanic plug of Spectrum Peak (2648m), Rhino Peak (2868 m), Rhino NW3 (2787m) with views of Chilko Lake, and high ridges leading to RCAF peak (2887m). For those, like myself, interested in a couple of days of something more challenging (and willing to carry in some climbing gear), Mount Oreamnos (2800+ m) and other icy peaks South of the Pass are possibilities.

Hiking out via the Yohetta Valley to create a loop may be an option.

Trip logistics:

The plan is to drive up Saturday Sept 20, and drive back Sunday Sept 28. In the 7 days in between, we'll spend 5-6 days on the Spectrum pass hike/camp.

Spectrum Pass is a long day's backpack (17 km) each way from the end of the road (5300'), on a rough but good trail. The trail goes half way up the Tchaikazan valley, then cuts up a side valley to the pass (7400'). Peaks in the area are 8500' -9500' and are mostly scrambling peaks with some small glaciers.

This is mostly hiking and scrambling although ice axe/crampons are advisable.
