Trip Description

Mystery and Beaujolais are on the east side of the Hurley River Rd, approached up the Hope Creek logging roads. The approach and the routes are as described in Matt Gunn's Scrambles book. Both are classed as difficult scrambles. A high clearance 4WD vehicle is required for the last section of the logging road.

We plan to drive up Friday afternoon and camp at the trailhead, hike in on Saturday and do one of the peaks, camp in alpine Saturday night, climb the other on Sunday and come out. Both peaks are scrambles but we expect lots of snow.

Required gear: Ice axe, helmet, crampons, camping gear.

Expect bugs at the campsite on Friday night. There may or may not be water close by where we camp, so bring water from home or be prepared to fill up lower down.

Expect to camp on snow on Saturday night. There will probably be running water, but bring a bit of extra fuel in case we have to melt snow.

If you want to come on this trip please send us the following information when you sign up.

  • When can you leave town on Friday? We plan to leave around 2:00, but there will probably be people that want to come up later as well.
  • What area of town do you live in?
  • Do you have a high clearance 4WD vehicle you can bring and if so, how many people (including yourself) can you take?
  • A bit about your recent scrambling and mountaineering experience.
