Program Objectives and Target Audience
This trip is an introduction to backcountry skiing for those who have never skied outside a resort.
If you are an intermediate skier who can confidently ski 'blue' (intermediate) runs in bounds and want to try backcountry skiing, this trip is for you.
This is not an avalanche course and no previous avalanche training is required. Your next step after taking this course is to take the AST-1 avalanche course.
Destination
The destination will depend on the conditions, but most likely will be the Diamond Head area of Garibaldi Park or Zoa Peak off the Coquihalla Highway.
Program topics
Equipment use, route finding, track setting, avalanche hazard awareness.
Equipment Required
You will need to bring your own backcountry ski equipment (skis, boots, poles, and skins), shovel, probe and avalanche transceiver. All of these can be rented from MEC, but make sure to book in advance!
Cost: free
