Trip Description

A two-day introduction to lead climbing using gear for protection.

The course participants will learn:

  • to place gear and evaluate placements
  • clipping techniques
  • gear anchors
  • The participants will also be able to practice on mock leads and, if time permits, on real leads.

The course prerequisites are:

  • top rope climbing experience: 5.8 (5.9 indoors)
  • belaying and rappelling experience
  • knots: clove hitch, munter hitch, figure-8 knot, prussik, etc.

 

Required gear:

  • helmet
  • harness
  • belay device
  • shoes
  • chalk bag
  • a sense of humor

 

Note:  ropes and trad gear (nuts, cams, etc.) will be provided.

Jason Wheeler and Winifred Swatschek
 

Evening intro: Wednesday, May 4th (likely 7pm, location TBD)

Two-day instruction and practice: Saturday, May 7–Sunday, May 8 (likely from 8:00-4:00, not including travel from Vancouver). First day is a go if it rains the Saturday but might need to reschedule the second day if raining on Sunday.
 

Cost: $150 (PayPal or cheque. You will be provided the payment details once the instructor confirms your spot)
