Trip Description

Winter Leadership Course

A “Leader” is someone who influences the behavior of others and helps them reach their common goals and achieve their objectives. The leader may guide people to change or improve their knowledge, skill or attitude. Outdoor leadership means that the goals happen in the natural environment.

Course Content - all within the context of a winter environment

  • Group dynamics - What are they, how do we identify where we are in the group process in its development, thereby determining our most appropriate leadership style, and how do we communicate with the group in each of these stages of development.
  • Communication Styles - What is the most appropriate style for specific situations, communicating with clarity, conciseness, compassion and effectiveness? Other techniques of communication, role, body language, eye contact. The importance of the voice.
  • Decision making processes and techniques - How to determine the type of decision-making that will be the most effective for the situation. Do we involve others or not, and when and why?
  • Risk Management - How do we manage the risk for ourselves, our group and the environments we are traveling through?
