Trip Description

It's that time of year: too wet for rock climbing, too snowy for scrambling, too warm for skiing (to me, at least). Is it time to pull out the mountain bike? Perhaps. Time to lock the skis up? Mmmmm, maybe not yet. Is it time to climb Mount Fromme? Oh yes, most definitely.

Mt. Fromme is situated in the middle of the North Shore Mountains (roughly), and is a non technical hike with up to 900m elevation gain. It starts with a rabbit warren of mountain bike trails that threatens to confuse the ideal hiker. Then, transitioning to a dedicated hiking trail, the route goes steadily up and up through the rainforest canopy, at times getting a little rough, but nothing technical beyond a brief branch belay. The summit is an open area, likely with views of the inside of a cloud. Expect snow on the summit. Microspikes are encouraged, though they will likely stay in the bag because they always do. The trip will go forward if it is raining because the forecast is for rain as I type this and I wouldn't be proposing this trip if it couldn't be done in the rain. Bring waterproof attire and things to warm yourself by. The trip itself should be done in 4-6 hours, depending on how long we linger on the summit. This trip will not be fast paced, it is a social event designed to encourage socializing, and the pace will be leisurely.

We will meet at the trailhead at 4299 St. George Avenue at 10AM. Parking is generally okay (street parking, be mindful of the residents), particularly on a rainy day. I live in Central Lonsdale, and would be happy to drive participants to the trailhead so long as they live within reasonable distance of my commute. Carpooling is a nice idea and will be encouraged.

The mountain was named after Julius Martin Fromme, a previous mayor of North Vancouver and resident of Lynn Valley. He was called the Father of Lynn Valley. He had four kids and a cat.
