By most accounts Burnt Knoll is a fairly straightforward winter objective with moderate stats (14km round trip and 500m elevation gain/loss). The route is well established, popular with both skiers and snowshoers, and mostly avoids avalanche terrain. The Fat Dog Trail does traverse some steep slopes, but the route is in the trees. We can do Burnt Knoll as an out and back. Or, if we have enough energy, time, and good conditions, we can also head along the wide open ridge line toward Fat Dog Ridge, a vista between Three Brothers and Big Buck Mountains. The stats (mainly the distance) will of course increase if we choose to extend the trip beyond Burnt Knoll.
Required gear: snowshoes, microspikes, rain shells, and the ten essentials
Recommended gear: poles w/snow baskets, snow gaiters, good boots
I can drive up to three others, but if we have a full group, we'll need another driver.
