Estimated Time: 5–7 hours car-to-car. Please do not sign up unless you are fully committed.
Trip Overview: We’ll be skiing the Fat Dog Trail starting from the Cambie Creek winter parking lot off Highway 3 near Allison Pass. This is a classic Manning Park winter tour featuring a steady forest climb that transitions into open subalpine meadows with views toward Frosty and the North Cascades. There is a long flat section that leads to sub treeline easy to moderate skiing. This is not lift-access skiing. Expect a sustained climb on skins, variable snow (powder, wind-affected, or packed track), and a controlled descent on the same route.
Objective: Enjoy a scenic winter ski tour in a supportive group setting; practice efficient skinning and downhill control on moderate terrain; reinforce safe backcountry travel habits. This is not a charging or high intensity day - more of a touring day with potential for good turns.
Safety & Expectations: We will check the Avalanche Canada forecast prior to departure and discuss terrain choices at the trailhead. We will travel conservatively and take plenty of small breaks.
Participants must be comfortable: skiing ungroomed terrain, descending moderate slopes with a pack; being outdoors in winter for a full day
If hazard ratings are High or conditions deteriorate, the leader may turn the group around.
Mandatory Gear (no exceptions):touring skis (no splitboards only bc of the terrain) with skins; Avalanche transceiver (digital); Shovel (metal blade); Probe; Helmet (strongly recommended); Headlamp; Extra insulating layer; Full-day food supply; Minimum 1.5L water; Basic repair kit
No beacon = no participation
Forecast is calling for snow and increased avalanche hazard. Both will be monitored closely ahead of trip. Conditions may be boney so minimum high intermediate ski skills required.
