Gravity Wars is a local sport climbing competition hosted at the Squamish climbing gym. There are volunteer shifts running all day on Saturday the 27th. We can meet at St. Davids United Church in the morning and carpool up. I signed up for assistant judging from 8am-630pm.
From the Executive Director of the event:
We can absolutely always use more volunteers - lots of opportunities for new judges, scorekeepers, rope runners (assisting the lead belayers) athlete runners (keeping everyone in order and ready to climb). If BCMC wants to put word out, I have no doubt the event officials would be happy to see roles being filled.
Volunteers just need to register with a free membership through our website, and then they can go to the event page and choose which shifts they want to sign up for.
As for belaying, we have a competition-specific belaying training course that prospective event belayers need to go through. We run them on an as-needed basis, like what we're doing tonight with a couple of members at Base5 North Van. Depending on the trainee's level of comfort belaying with an ATC, proficiency at catching falls, etc. there may be more than one session, but we do need to build out our pool of capable belayers and are always looking for more people.
