Trip Description

New trail from Watersprite Lake to the Watersprite Tower/ Dreadnought Col

Winifred and I are hiking up to Watersprite early Friday morning, and camping at the lake.

We will be working as this weekend’s Watersprite Lake Rec Site camp hosts.

Join us Saturday morning at the lake.

We will hike the new trail from Watersprite Lake to the col between Dreadnought and Watersprite tower.

You will need to be able to navigate the backroads to the trailhead with no cell service. After crossing Skookum Creek (approx

13.3km from the Hwy 99 turn-off), the final branch from Mamquam FSR to the trailhead (7km) rough and potholed with sharp rocks that caused numerous punctures this season. Airing down a few psi will smooth things out, decrease chances of a puncture, and reduce damage to the road. The main FSR and the branch are in good condition for 4x4 or SUV-AWD with sturdy tires. City cars and tires and 2WD not recommended. Being prepared for self-rescue is much less costly.

The Watersprite Summer trail to the lake is well marked and the hike is moderate with challenging sections, especially the boulder fields after the mid-point, as the terrain steepens. There are creeks along the way with good flow for refilling water bottles. The last climb up to the lake is the steepest, and the final 500m around the right side (south side) of the lake, through boulders, is challenging. There is a creek flowing into the lake near the start of the new trail.

We will be monitoring our GMRS/FRS radios, and will share the channel when you join, so bring yours.

Bring along your own 10 essentials and gear that you feel is appropriate for this adventure.

You must have adequate ability and experience to hike from the parking lot trailhead to the lake and return by yourself or with other participants.

Let us know if you need Friday night camping reservations, or if you will get a very early start from the parking lot trailhead on Saturday to meet us at the lake.
