Trip Description

Mt. Bishop is named after the first president of BCMC (1907-1910). Joseph Bishop (1851-1913) was a photographer, leading mountaineer and charter member of the club.  FKA   of Mt. Bishop was Aug 9, 1908 by a BCMC party of 19,, who arrived via the eastern approach from Indian Arm.  The 19 were almost 50% total club membership of the club at the time.  This is one of 30-odd peaks in BC named after BCMC Members.  If you are a peak bagger with grand ambition:  As far as I know, no club member has yet to climb them all. Glory and immortality await you! This trip is a great stepping off point for that  very very difficult goal.  See here: https://www.peakbagger.com/list.aspx?lid=-953113&cid=48529

If you are of the Bagger Challenge persuasion: be advised that the summer season has not yet opened and therefore this peak/ascent will not be recognized in this years challenge.

According to club member Bill Maurer (check out his book "The Glorious Mountains of Vancouver's North Shore) This is a grand, one day multi stage adventure.  Start with a 10km bike ride. Then "Scamper"  up a veritable ropes course called the Vicar lakes trail (also described as a 1980's video game "Pitfall"). the danger isn't great, but picking your way up the various granite and root walls is sure to be interesting.   Once at the top of the ropes course,  it'll be a snow covered climb to the peak itself.  I've never done this hike before, and I am always open to suggestions on modifications. Anyway, expect some views and good company.

This will be a long day with snow on the upper bits, so plan accordingly: microspikes or crampons,  decent boots, gaitors and an ice axe and headlamp. Bike lock of course, unless you have a truly crappy bike that I can hide my swanky touring bike under.

bike 2 x 10km

hike 14 km 1400 m round trip

Group gear:

I'll have a first aid kit, Inreach and 6 person bothy bag. I'll also bring along a couple of rocky talkies so as to allow the group elastic to get a bit longer if some of us are moving at a different pace than others between re group points. IF you've got one or more, please bring them.(channel 19, privacy code 07 <--- the club's "official" radio channel).

Brian T is bringing a stove, so be sure to bring a mug with you
