Trip Description

Alpen Mountain is a relatively unknown gem in Squamish, offering stunning panoramic views of the Tantalus Range, Howe Sound, and surrounding peaks. The hike starts on a FSR before transitioning into alpine terrain, where open meadows and ridges lead toward the summit. The final section includes steep avalanche terrain that may require caution depending on snow conditions.

The stats of this hike vary depending on how high we are able to drive up the FSR. The stats below assume that we parked at the beginning of the spur leading up to Alpen. But probably we will be able to drive several km up the FSR.

Hike Details

  • Trail: Alpen Mountain.
  • Duration: 7-8 hours.
  • Distance: 18km round trip (it'll be less if we drive up the FSR).
  • Elevation gain: 1,257 m (it'll be less depending on how high we get up the FSR).
  • Difficulty: hard, suitable for those with previous snowshoeing experience in similar hikes.
  • Scrambling/Exposure: Simple scramble at the end, no exposure.

Meeting Details

  • Time: 7:00 am.
  • Location:  St David's United Church for carpooling.
  • Carpooling fee: recommended round trip of $30/person up to two passengers, and $25/person for three and more passengers.
  • Driving Notes: AWD vehicle with winter tires and snow chains.

Avalanche Conditions

This route traverses avalanche terrain, particularly in the alpine sections. AST-1 training and avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, shovel) are required for all participants. I will review the avalanche forecast on Saturday and we might do another objective if conditions are unsafe.

What to bring

  1. Ten Essentials: North Shore Rescue's recommended list.
  2. Avy gear (beacon, probe, and shovel).
  3. Snowshoes.
  4. Layered Clothing: Including a waterproof layer; expect lower temperatures at higher elevations.
  5. Water: At least 2 liters.
  6. Food and Snacks.
  7. Gloves.
  8. Optional Items: Poles, microspikes, gaiters.
