Trip Description

Come for one day or 7. I lead 5.10 trad but the activity is welcome to anyone who climbs trad or wishes to follow. I expect each climber to know how to lead climb, lead belay, clean an anchor, and rappel.

Area Description

Squamish is home to the best trad climbing in Canada, and hosts the formidable granite monolith, The Stawamus Chief. Nearly all the climbing in Squamish is on granite, but streaks of basalt can often be found spattered through routes.

Squamish contains multiple trad climbing crags where the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed and approachable. Two notable trad crags are Murrin Park and Smoke Bluffs Park.

Full day trad epics can make lasting memories, and are best done after gaining experience and in groups of two.

Navigation

Buy the guidebook or make sure you are with someone who has it. The widely-used guidebook these days is "Squamish Selects" 4th edition by Marc Bourdon.

Camping

I'll be camping at The Stawamus Chief campground. You should do the same. It's the best campground in Squamish. $10/person/night with all sites being walk-in and first come first served. 4 people per tent pad max I believe.

Other options include Mamquam River Campground ($10/person/night, reservation only, right beside an equestrian center and across the street from a firing range. No potable water.), Alice Lake Campground (reso only, showers included, flush toilets, $25/person/night), Walmart parking lot (do not erect permanent structures), or camping on a pull-out up the Mamquam FSR (Solid choice).

Communication

I expect each group to check-in with me before setting out on any given day and when they are heading back home/back to camp. If I hear nothing from a group in the morning, I will be irritated. If I hear nothing from a group by 2100, I will get worried. If I hear nothing from a group by 2300, I will call Search and Rescue.

I have created a main Whatsapp groupchat for planning. I will create separate Whatsapp groupchats for each individual day, and add the corresponding participants the night before.

Gear

Don't forget the stuff you need. Come to this trip with supplies to be self-sufficient for the duration you are joining.

Rope and rack: if you have it, bring it and sort out specifics in the parking lot.

Other

Squamish General Hospital is the nearest hospital. Vancouver General Hospital is the nearest trauma center.

Groceries can be bought in town. The Walmart does not have produce.

Climb On is the local climbing store.
