A introductory day for first time backcountry skiers. This is a day to try out the gear, ask questions about how to safely backcountry ski, and learn what you need to know in order to start to participate in more club trips. If you've ever felt like you want to try Backcounty skiing but are concerned that your skills aren't there, or you don't know where to start, this is the day for you. Want to learn more about the history of Backcountry skiing in the coast range?
AST-1 not required.
We'll be trying out the gear in a low avalanche risk enviornment (you'll need to source your own gear). Don't expect great skiing (or even good downhill skiing!), but rather expect an opportunity to strap the gear on, get used to moving uphill with skiis and a pack and winter clothing. Learn how to switch your gear between up hill and downhill travel. Understand next steps to becoming an backcountry skier.
We'll have an evening zoom session a week prior (where you'll be introduced to backcountry skiing (gear, what BC skiing is, what you need to know)) to our day in the field. Participation in the zoom sessoin is mandatory for the day trip.
I'm also looking for one or two competent backcountry skiers that can assist me with this event. If that's you, reach out to me directly and we can have you join as a co-leader.
We also have a volunteer backcountry boarder joining us....if anyone wants to backcountry snowboard.
NOTE: English and Korean will be spoken at this event. Other languages are encouraged!
