Trip Description

This trip suggestion is the first of what I would like to offer this summer for the slow and steady amoung us: a classic climb in a manageable and friendly pace. My expectation is that everyone contributes and engages with the planning and execution of this trip. So, please read up on the route before committing to the day.

I have not done this climb yet, and it looks like a doozy. Alltrails says it is 15.3km, though most find they travel 20km. The elevation gain is a brutal 2023m. At the moment, people are completing the climb with spikes, crampons and snowshoes. Mountaineering axe sounds like a must. Check out: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/sigurd-peak for more information.

I am a moderate hiker at a slightly moderate pace, which means I tend to fall behind the more fit variety. But, I can go all day long, which is what this trip will likely require. I have many years of experience in alpine climbing, having cut my teeth in the Rockies with the ACC Calgary Section. (I've climbed Mt. Lefroy, Huber, Victoria, Alexandra, and even led the Silverhorn on Athabasca while brutally under the weather..to name a few classics of the area).

You are a moderately fit hiker, or better. You have some background in hiking, and access to all the required equipment. You might be a beginner in mountaineering (wearing crampons, using an axe). This can be a trip for you, but let me know. We might do a little pretraining exercise in self arresting if need be.

Yes, it is a very big climb, and the objective of the day will be to get as high on the mountain as possible (which, of course, might not be the summit, but I hope not). Anticipate a very long day, particularly with a slow and steady crowd. We will be a group that communicates often about how the trip is going, and the trip expectations will evolve with the nature of the group.

Meet up at St. David's Church at 6AM. I am leaving from Kitsilano at 5th and Yew, and would be happy to carpool. I will give late comers a 10 minute window, but no more.

I will bring, along with the essentials: a longish mountaineering axe, microspikes, glacier crampons, a helmet, warm clothing, a change of clothing, rain gear, waterproof light hiking boots. I have a Zoleo for emergency use.

The trip date or objective may change or be canceled outright depending on the weather. A bluebird day would be ideal, but we might push ahead with intermittent weather. This will be discussed in the forum.
