Trip Description

The rockfall on the Elaho and E-200 road has been cleared. There is a very unstable section on the latter road that will likely become blocked again quite soon, so now is the time for a trip, especially given the weather forecast. The snow line should be around 500m, making for a 2000m climb divided evenly over two days, and about 18km total.

Wednesday, we will have a casual start, aiming to camp at a small pond at 1450m. For Thursday's summit attempt, we'll get a pretty early start to mitigate the warming. Glacier travel will be involved beyond where we camp, so everyone will need glacier gear, plus the usual avy gear. We'll need at least two ropes in the group. The main hazard will likely be overhead cornices as we traverse below the summit ride. Expect a 45-50deg bootpack for the final short summit push. The entire route appears to be relatively low angle on fatmap (see attached GPS file), but we will still have to assess avy hazard, especially given the forecasted warming for Thursday.

Forecast currently calls for some rain on Wednesday, but sunny and clear Thursday. Trip is weather dependent and may change if forecast changes. I don't expect the skiing to be particularly challenging, but we will be skiing down through trees and the snow might be pretty thick by then. The pace is expected to be average. The road is high clearance, 4x4, and alder pinstriping should be expected. I have a vehicle and can plan to drive.
