Hello,
A winter snowshoe/mountaineering objective, Mount Duke is prominent looking summit at the south end of Caspar creek valley not far from the Joffre group. From trip reports and videos, the climb doesn't look too strenuous or exposed; however, this trip requires proper mountaineering equipment (crampons and ice axe minimum) as well as avalanche gear (probe, beacon, and shovel) and other standard gear (ie ten essentials).
Participants must be comfortable exerting themselves in cold weather for long periods and must possess basic backcountry skills and be avalanche aware and competent (AST-1 certification).
The plan is to meet at the trailhead (carpooling from west Vancouver); camping at the trailhead is an option. It would be a LONG day with lots of time in the field, so prep and plan accordingly!
If the avalanche forecast and/or weather forecast is not great (at or above 'Considerable' (orange)) we can reschedule a week or so later in hopes of a stable snowpack and good weather. If reschedule or cancellation is needed I will inform the group within a timely manner.
I'd like to keep the group to 4 persons maximum and 3 persons minimum.
