Trip Description

Come explore the Rim Trail in Cathedral Provincial Park with me on a Friday-to-Monday extended weekend trip.

The group size depends on if you can drive your vehicle. I have room for 2 to 3 people in my car. I think 6 overall is a good size.

As Matt Gunn writes in the Scrambles Book, "Cathedral Park is a fantastic collection of interesting summits and lakes...and is an interesting change for those used to lush coastal forests. Long open ridges and gentle summits make it a great place to seek easy, friendly summits."

Check out some videos of this area:

And recent Facebook trip report: "Cathedral is spectacular and lives up to the hype. Very unique in terms of access, terrain, and amenities for SWBC. Highly highly recommended."

General plan

My preference is to complete the plan together as a group, however I'm open to discussing other options depending on your skills and interests.

  • Friday morning: drive from Vancouver to the Cathedral Lakes Lodge Base Camp (Google Maps)
  • Friday afternoon: ride the lodge's unimog 4x4 shuttle
    • The shuttle cost is $157.50 return
    • Space is available for the 2pm trip
    • Note: Reservations are required and non-refundable, so I plan to reserve my space on Sunday September 11 once we are okay with the weather forecast
    • The shuttle means you can pack some splurge items because the hike from the lodge to the campsite is 1km and descends 20-30m.
  • Saturday: full day hike the south half of the Rim Trail, including summit Smokey the Bear, Giant Cleft, Grimface Mountain, Stone City, and Devil's Woodpile
    • Difficulty: Moderate, one exposed step (from Scrambles Book)
    • Distance: 17km
    • Cumulative gain: 1130m
    • Elevation range: 2040m - 2605m
    • GPX file attached
  • Sunday: full day hike the north half of the Rim Trail, including summit Quinsicoe Mountain, Red Mountain, and Scout Mountain
    • Difficulty: Easy/Moderate? (not in Scrambles Book)
    • Distance: 14km
    • Cumulative gain: 740m
    • Elevation range: 2040m - 2545m
    • GPX file attached
  • Monday: ride the lodge's unimog 4x4 shuttle and drive home
    • Space is currently available for the 9am and 1pm trips
Trip costs per person About me

Hey there! I'm Julien and this is my first time organizing a BCMC trip. I've been backcountry hiking and camping for 6 years and am gradually venturing into scrambling and mountaineering. I completed a mountaineering course in September 2021 and started indoor climbing in 2022. For work, I'm a UX designer for the City of Vancouver. I also enjoy cooking, gardening, playing ultimate frisbee and volleyball, and watching sci-fi.

My fitness level is average so I don't hike too slowly or too quickly. I like to pause and appreciate scenery, take photos, chat, etc. I like a mix of lively conversation and quiet downtime. I've enjoyed hiking weekly this (short!) summer and deepened my appreciation for how being active in the outdoors recharges me and nourishes my wellbeing.

I've completed one trip so far with BCMC in July to the Squamish River and it was quite challenging with a combination of difficult terrain, long days, and unstable weather. I applied the soft skills from my mountaineering course to help maintain our team's morale and facilitate consensus with navigation.

My priorities on trips are to:

  • Match the slowest person's pace, so the groups stays together
  • Be aware of and consider terrain transitions and hazards
  • Reach consensus on route finding and planning
  • Debrief at the end of each day
  • Share in our group's responsibility to ensure everyone stays safe

Thanks for reading and I hope you sign up! Please reach out if you have questions.
