Trip Description

This is a free course that some of our members have developed to provide an alternative to AST training.  The course was originally developed by Frank Baumann and Jay MacArthur is looking for experienced club members to learn how to teach the information and and he will pass the torch onto them.

Beginners, intermediate and experienced backcountry skiers are welcome to attend.  If you have taken, an AST course I’m sure you will hear some different ideas about avalanche terrain classification and digging pits that you won’t learn in an AST course.

Usually the course is done on two consecutive days with the first day as a seminar format.  Since the snowpack won’t be too interesting at Paul Ridge where we usually head on Sunday, we may defer the field days to another time.  If you are a member of the BCMC, there are two tentative Avalanche Companion Rescue courses being taught by Jim Nosella.

For the experienced members who are interested in teaching the course we will have an open discussion on how to teach certain details and skills if possible but we may need to defer to another session if required.

The course will be on Google Meet.  I’ll send out joining information on Friday.  I'm thinking about 10-3 with an hour lunch break.  That leaves time to enjoy the sun before or afterwards.
