Trip Description

Due to conditions and persistent weak layer in Garibaldi and South Coast, we will change destinations.

Meeting Place: Sunset Trailhead (Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/2jr8No5XqrNC9B7Y8)

Meeting Time: Friday, February 11 at 7:30am

New Trip Plan is Thomas Peak with two possible options for skiing, depending on time, group fitness and conditions.

Option A is a 200m run from the summit of Thomas Peak down the south face of the North Lion.  While the run is short, views will be epic and it's an icon line visible from the city!! We climb back up the shoulder of Thomas Peak to descend to Harvey Ck via Enchantment Pass.

Option B would be to summit Thomas Pk and ski the stunning north slope between West Lion and Thomas.  Conditions will be carefully assessed during the ascent to Enchantment Pass.

After either Option A or B, we could have the chance for a spring-like lap on the side of Mt Harvey.  Depending how everyone feels, this could be a 2,100m+ day.

Items to bring:

  • Trail runners or light hikers for the lower part of the trail.  We'll be on shoes until we hit snow.  I can bring a drybag of some sort to stash shoes for pickup on the way down.
  • Ice axe.  There are a couple steeper slopes.  We may be kicking steps in 1 or 2 spots.
  • All the usual safety kit, food, water and clothing

Old trip plan follows...

Sky Pilot Day Trip

Date: Friday, February 11
Time: 8:30am
Meeting Location: Sea to Sky Gondola Parking

Gondola access backcountry trip to Sky Pilot.  Plan is to climb up to West Ridge and ski a lap.  Second lap somewhere off Co-Pilot.  We'll be back at Gondola prior to last download.

Gondola tickets must be purchased in advance on the Sea to Sky Gondola website.  Cost is $56.00.

Total elevation gain ~1,500m.  Total distance ~10km.  We will almost certainly be bootpacking for a time.

In addition to all the usual avalanche gear, bring an ice axe.  If conditions dictate, we may bring boot crampons as well.  Will confirm prior to date.
