 5-Day Ice Leader Camp

This course is taught by Sean Isaac an ACMG guide.

Course Dates: Jan 17-21, 2022

Course Location: Canmore, AB

I have registered for this camp and as of Sep 17, 2021, only two more spots are available. It would be good to have a BCMC group from Vancouver carpool for this camp. The plan is to leave Vancouver a day or two before the camp and head back from Canmore a day after the camp. Please feel free to reach out to Sean if you have any questions about this camp. Once you have registered for this camp with Sean, please let me know and I will confirm you on the trip.

Please find below the details from Sean

About Me (Sean)I am an ACMG Alpine Guide with 30 years of experience on ice. I have been guiding ice full-time for 17 winters and before that was a sponsored professional climber. I have also written many books on the subject including Mixed Climbs in the Canadian Rockies, Mixed Climbing, ACC Ice Climbing Leaders Handbook, forthcoming How to Ice Climb by Falcon and the ice and mixed chapters in the new ACMG Technical Manual.

About the Camp: The camp is five days long from Monday to Friday (January  17-21, 2021). Most days will begin around 7-8 am and end around 4 pm. The week is focused on helping the novice and intermediate ice climbers gain skills and experience to set themselves up for the rest of the winter ice season. Even advanced climbers will garner much knowledge from the week by learning new tricks and breaking old bad habits. We will dive into the three main categories that any climber must master: hazard management, movement skills and technical systems. You will learn to recognize and mitigate the numerous and various threats to an ice climber. We will spend much time dialling in movement skills since that is the foundation of solid and secure leading. As for technical systems, we will look at different ice anchors, rappel systems and back-ups, improvised rescue tricks, multi-pitch efficiency and fixed-point lead belays. There will also be a day dedicated to mixed climbing. My main goal for participants of this camp is to finish feeling like they have a good grasp of all the components of ice climbing so they can have a safe and fun winter. There will be an emphasis on putting all these skills together to learn how to lead safely on your own, whether that be actual leading or setting up top ropes in order to gain more experience.

RegistrationThe camp costs $900 plus 5% GST. This only covers the instructional fee. Personal equipment, accommodation, food and transport is not include. It is best to find accommodation in Canmore. I would suggest contacting the ACC Clubhouse. There are also many local motels offering great discounts in winter. To register your spot, you can e-transfer $945 to sean@seanisaac.com (contact Sean before making the transfer)

CancellationI recommend you look into purchasing cancellation insurance from a provider. Some even cover COVID-19 related cancellations. If travel restrictions occur due to the pandemic then a credit will be issued for a future camp or guiding. Unfortunately, refunds will not be available.

Hazards: Ice climbing has numerous hazards. Most of these can be managed but not eliminated. By coming on this course, it is understood that you have read the waiver (attached below) and accept its conditions and acknowledge the potential hazards. Some hazards that we may encounter include but are not limited to: falling ice, falling rock, falling ice tools, avalanche, cornices, cold, sharp equipment, trips and slips, open water, wildlife, winter driving, infectious viruses and more. I have attached the ACMG waiver (shared in trip files) for you to read through. If you have any questions pertaining to the waiver, please ask. I will have copies of it on the first day for you to sign.
