"Granite Falls is a spectacular place to camp. The huge waterfall flows down and over rocks for 150ft and makes a truly fantastic place to lay your head. Camp south of the falls and then head up to the Indian River estuary to check out where the river meets the ocean."
Sounds pretty good eh? I can promise you the views on the way are worth it alone!
The plan at the moment would be to rent kayaks from Deep Cove Kayak early on Saturday morning and get a head start on any other potential campers. We'll snack on the float and aim to reach Granite Falls by early afternoon. After setting up camp and having a warm lunch we can jump back in the Kayaks and explore the tip of the Indian Arm. Sunday morning will be another early start so that we can try to beat any potential afternoon headwinds on the way home.
Deep Cove Kayak run a quick intro before setting off. This includes information like how to maneuver your kayak and how to get back into it if you end up flipping over. They also include all of the water safety essentials like a PFD, paddle, whistle, spray skirt, bailing pump and a towline. A single kayak costs $150 to rent for 48 hours while a double is $219.
In terms of experience I think this trip is accessible to most people with a good level of fitness. You should be a competent swimmer with the ability to swim to shore (50' approx.) if needed. We will be paddling on a pretty busy stretch of water so you should also be comfortable being around other boats. The paddle up to Granite Falls can take anywhere between 4 to 6 hours so be prepared to sit for a while. Finally, although its unlikely, be prepare to get a little wet if you fall in :)
Equipment is very similar to backpacking as most of the kayaking gear is provided with a rental. I would recommend picking up some dry bags for your clothes and such. There is plenty of space in each kayak so feel free to pack all of your creature comforts.
Strong winds and poor visibility can make any journey on the water lethal so this trip will be weather dependent. If we are unlucky to have a bad forecast we can adjust to a day hike or even an overnight backpacking trip if people are interested.
