6:00am St Davids Church, Taylor Way, North Vancouver
Distance: 15km round-trip. Gain: 1080m. Time: 7-8hrs?
Add 3km, 300m+ gain, and a few more hours if we agree to continue to Puma's true summit.
Pace will be a bit above average but with snack breaks every 2hrs and a sit-down lunch if conditions allow.
We'll be starting before the Whistler Olympic Park opens for the day, so we'll park at the Alexander Falls lot and skip the logistics of gate hours and backcountry passes. This will add 2km and about 60m gain on groomed trails. We'll use the 'East Madeley' route (with the West Madeley as an alternate option), and then the Beverley Ck winter trail, then branch off and head up the Puma route. I'll add gps in the next day or so.
Puma S1 will be the objective, but if the stars align and everyone is happy with the plan, we may continue to the true summit which adds 3km and over 300m more cumulative gain, but let's not get our hopes up too high.
Hoping for good discussion and group decision making around avalanche conditions and route finding. Please note that I have not been in this area at all before. There are many trip reports on Bivouac, the VOC has a page on the trip, as does Steven Song. Reports indicate a fair bit of old growth and nothing too dense, but I can't promise we won't get into denser forest, so you should be a confident skier (can do black diamond runs without trouble).
We'll plan to be out before dark, but please bring a headlamp and food for 10hrs of touring (though I expect we won't be much past 8hrs). Also bring a radio, if you wish. And avy gear, helmet and sunscreen.
Don't forget the time change Saturday night. And check the planning forum for updates/discussion!
