Meeting Place: 5:45am at St. David’s. Use the planning forum to arrange carpooling to the meeting place as needed.
Destination: Panorama Ridge (ish) from the Cheakamus trailhead.
Trip Distance / Elevation: A long day with up to ~30km of distance and ~1400m elevation gain.
General Plan: Hike to snow and then snowshoe until turn around time (~2:30pm). Pace will be on the fast side, but with a focus on enjoying the day and not necessarily on the destination. The grade and trail are very moderate as far as Panorama Ridge. Once on the ridge an ice axe may be good insurance against a fall. Unless all participants have avalanche gear and training, we will stay away from avalanche terrain. Where we go and how far we get will depend a lot on local snow conditions. Plan to finish in the dark. <https://www.hikingproject.com/trail/7054722/panorama-ridge-from-cheakamus-lake>
NOTE: The forecast is currently calling for snow on Friday down to Whistler village. Depending on forecast, the total number of participants may be limited by the number of vehicles that have 4x4 and chains capable of driving on the road to Cheakamus lake.
Gear Required: Ice axe (recommended), food for the day, warm / waterproof clothes, headlamp, spare batteries, 10 essentials <https://www.mec.ca/en/explore/the-10-essentials-hiking-camping>. Check the weather and plan accordingly <https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Cinder-Cone-British-Columbia/forecasts/1910>.
Suggested Driver Compensation: Return distance is 226km: Guidelines suggest ~$50 for the car plus $5 each passenger for the unpaved road. A car with driver plus 3 / 4 passengers would yield ~$23 / ~$17.5 each.
Medical Info: Please send an email and/or phone ASAP any info that should be shared with the organizer. For example, if you are very allergic to bee/wasp bites, or you are taking medication that could be vital information to First Aid Responders. Anything you choose to share will remain private.
