Glacier Peak is the most remote, wild and beautiful of the 5 volcanoes in Washington state. At 10,540 feet it is a massive glaciated mount that dominates the surrounding area. You must work hard to catch a glimpse of this secluded mountain and to summit it. The mountain itself is not technically difficult but does require glacier travel skills and glacier gear. I do not want to rush this mountain and move at a blistering pace but instead move with intent and spend 3 days enjoying this truly spectacular area. This is a 35 mile (56 km) hike with 10,000 + feet (3,000 + meters) of vertical gain.
My proposed plan:
2 teams of 3
We leave Thursday night after work (7 pm ish) and camp at the trailhead
Friday we wake up early but not painfully early, have a nice breakfast (I would make everyone breakfast burritos) and pack in to Glacier Gap (upper camp for Glacier Peak bid). This can and will take us all day. It will be hard and beautiful.
Friday night sleep at upper camp.
Saturday - wake up painfully early 2 a.m. and go for the summit of Glacier Peak with the option to also summit Disappointment Peak
Pack out - we can at least begin the pack out on Saturday. There are TONS of places to camp on the way out. So this is up to the group where and when we would like to camp on Saturday night.
Sunday - finish hiking out and drive home
This is not a beginners hike. This requires roped up glacier travel on moderate snow slopes with some steeper sections. However, I do believe the route will be straight forward. No dangling from cliffs. My goal is to make this enjoyable and hopefully get a really incredible summit en-tow.
I have a Toyota 4 runner and can fit 3 other people and gear.
