Trip Description

Plan is to skin up to Camp Schurman on day one and either skin or hike to the summit on day 2 (dependent on conditions) via the Emmons-Winthrop. If the road isn't open to White River Campground then the alternate route is the Disappointment Cleaver .

Drive down Friday evening (May 17th), staying overnight at the trailhead, skin to high camp on Saturday, make a summit attempt on Sunday (May 19th). We may summit and descend on Monday depending on conditions on Sunday.

This trip is contingent on good weather and acceptable avalanche risk. We'll evaluate weather in the days prior to departure and adjust plans as necessary.

The following is required of all participants:

  • Previous mountaineering experience in an unguided trip
  • Training in glacier travel, crevasse rescue, and avalanche skills
  • Experience at higher altitudes, ideally above around 10K feet/3K meters elevation
  • Appropriate equipment and familiarity with its use, including - but not limited to - a four-season tent (used in winter conditions), as well as a harness, crevasse rescue, and potentially avalanche rescue gear (TBD)
  • Valid passport and ability to enter America

Gear required (group gear will be discussed in the planning forum):

  • Skis
  • Boot and ski crampons and ice axe
  • Rope (1 per 3 people)
  • Harness, helmet
  • Crevasse rescue equipment and picket
  • Overnight camping gear and tent
  • Headlamp/torch - 10 essentials, other gear
  • Avalanche gear (TBD)

STRONGLY CONSIDER trip insurance for the trip. Do you want to get bankrupt because you slipped and hurt your ankle?

You MUST have a valid passport or other travel document enabling you to cross the US border. Arrange your ESTA visa in advance to save time at the border if you need one. Do NOT use the nexus lane unless everyone has a nexus card. Don't take fruit/vegetables across the border, it's not worth the hassle/risk - you can buy vegetables in the US easily, and no doubt you will enjoy the additional selection of food not available in Canada anyway.

Make sure your Emergency contact is up to date. You will need this to attend the trip.
