Ash pass mini mountaineering camp and traverse through Athelney Pass Thursday July 4 – Wed July 10
We will camp in spectacular meadows next to a little lake in Ash pass, from which we can access a variety of mountaineering objectives including Pebble Peak, Mt. Thiassi and Mount Ethelweard. After four nights in the pass we will traverse over to Athelney Pass via Ice Maker Mountain and then exit via Salal Creek. We will use a helicopter to access Ash Pass and exit on foot. Most peaks are scramble summits accessed over glaciers. Mt. Thiassi has a fifth class exposed ridge and an opportunity for more adventurous multi pitch routes on granite. There are also good hiking destinations along ridges to non technical summits. All participants must be familiar with roped glacier travel and crevasse rescue. This is not a course. Participants will be expected to have the skills to join a roped team of two or three to meet their chosen objectives. The camp in Ash pass is close to a cabin to get out of the rain for cooking and hanging out in bad weather. The traverse to Athelney Pass is primarily on glaciers. Helicopter costs will be shared and will depend on the number of participants. Based on one group of four, the flight in would be about $450 each. For a group of 10, the cost would be closer to $350. Costs could be lower based on helicopter activity in the area at the time. Cooking and food costs could be shared while in Ash pass using the facilities of the nearby cabin.
