we depart at 8am Friday May 18th from Water Shed Arts Cafe: 8660 200 St, Langley
The North Cascades Highway is scheduled to open May 11. Let's take a chance on some shoulder season mixed alpine climbing at Liberty Bell group! This is an exploration trip since the highway is not yet open so there are no route conditions available. We may get skunked but chances are we will find some good multi-pitch mixed rock & ice routes still in condition. We will drive to Washington Pass (~3 hrs from Sumas border) and snowshoe or ski in on Friday (1-2 hours depending on conditions; I will snowshoe), and set up a snow-camp at the base of the Southern facing routes (the Northern approach slopes are avy terrain; we won't go there). We'll climb whatever we find all day Saturday and we'll climb Sunday til mid-afternoon, then break camp, hike out and drive home.
Participants must be aware that the highway may close unexpectedly if there's a slide. We may be trapped on the wrong side of the slide and return home later than planned.
You'll pair yourselves up into teams to climb routes of your choosing according to your individual abilities & gear. There are moderate routes, but each rope team must be equipped and competent to climb unguided. This is not a guided climb, therefore this trip is not suitable for beginners.... sorry.
Max 8 participants. Proof of medical insurance will be required in order to be confirmed for the trip (e.g. BCAA Travel Insurance). We'll be entering the US, so... no felons allowed.
