Trip Description

This is the second night of Downhill Ski Training. This night is for entry level skiers who are still vary new. If you are uncomfortable on blue runs, or very new to skiing this is a great place to start.

Speaking to a number of members within the BCMC I’ve heard a lot of interest to in doing backcountry skiing but many people feel like they don’t have the requisite skills. So we’re going to run a couple midweek evening sessions focused on building and developing existing ski skills. There will be a $20 charge to join this course to cover the costs of lift tickets for the instructors.

The skill level for this course assumes people have done skiing before at least once or twice. The objective of this course is to take people who can already do parallel turns, and help them progress with specific skill building and training tips so that they can access the backcountry in the near future.

If you can only snowplow, fear not we will do one day on Dec 7th to help snowplow skiers progress to parallel.

Myself, Tam McTavish, a former Whistler Ski Instructor and CSIA lvl 1 , and Jack Casey, a former Grouse Ski Instructor and current CSIA lvl 2 will be doing the instruction. Jack and myself will each take 6 people based on skiing ability, for a group of 12 total.

All skiing gear must be arranged ahead of time. Participants are expected to have everything they need for  6 30pm so we can promptly get skiing. While the aim of this course is to help people ski in the backcountry, no backcountry safety or instruction will be covered. The focus is purely ski technique.

We will be skiing at Grouse mountain on a night session Nov 30th. If night skiing is not open as it currently appears to be, we will push this course back to Dec 7th. We will start by meeting in Starbucks at the Base at 6 30pm and going until 10pm at the latest. If people can't make that time they can meet us on the hill. I will be the only skier in a full blue suit with a neon Yellow helmet. Probably.

Public Transit or Carpools will be organised once we have a participant list.

We will run 3 courses, each independant of each other.

  • Nov 30th Beginner to intermediate,
  • Dec 7th Snowplow to Parallel,
  • Dec 14th Beginner to Intermediate at Cypress with tree skiing.
We will do the final course at Cypress instead of Grouse as there has been some interest in skiing there.
