route 147: Coleman-Deming F ice (8-12h) 1450m gain
This is the standard route up Baker, little more than a long, high walk with the ice axe when the weather is fine, but quite a walk it is. Technically the easiest route in the guide, its length and altitude nonetheless demand good judgement as to weather and snow conditions: the essence of alpinism.
I have done the route before in late August last year. I am confident the crevasse's have not opened up any more than last year as our snowfall was quite heavy this winter. Regardless we will be roping up on the glacier. My plan is to take our time and do some sightseeing on Sunday afternoon then start the climb Monday morning. I would like to camp at one of the high camps (colfax saddle) and then alpine start for the summit to catch that beautiful sunrise. We will then descend and try to make it back to Vancouver for the BCMC BBQ at 6pm.
