Trip Description

This area offers some of the best hiking and sights in all of the Rockies.  This trip is oriented around capturing striking vista, ridges and peaks.  Basic itinerary is highlighted below.

Day 0 - Sunday Aug 27.
I have reserved a private room for 5 at the Lake Louise Hi Hostel that has room for 6. This affords a day of travel to get to the Rockies and an early rise on the next day to begin the trek.

Day 1 - Monday Aug 28.
Early rise 6am and drive to Sunshine Village and take the first 8am Gondola to gain alpine elevation. Hike for 26km to Lake Magog via Citadel Pass. Net 800m up 900m down, approximately. Pitch tents for base camp at Lake Magog and do 3 select days hikes over following days.  There is a more moderate variation to sleep at Og Lake at km 22 if we were to need it.

Day 2 - Tue Aug 29.
Trek up Nub Peak. 8km all in. Net 600m up 600m down.

Day 3 - Wed Aug 30.
Trek up Wonder Peak. 10km all in. Net 700m up 700m down.

Day 4 - Thur Aug 31.
Trek up to Windy Ridge and Og Mountain. 14km all in. Net 800m up 800m down.

Day 5 - Fri Sep 1
Hike out. 26km.
Drive home or spend the night close to Banff. I will leave it up to each participant to decide and organize what they want to do with this night. At present there is space at the camp sites at Two Man Jack camp site close to Banff and these can be reserved and paid for online.

On the serious side.
I am not a professional guide, this is not a course, and this is not a trip for beginner hikers. Participants are all expected to contribute to trip preparations. A good level of fitness is required. This is not an appropriate trip if you have no overnight camping experience or are not comfortable or accustomed to hiking with 30 to 45 pounds of weight on your back.  Note the first day will involve up to 26km of hiking with a full pack. While there is no serious scrambling anticipated there is likely to be Ridge line hiking with an airy feel so you should be comfortable with this in a high alpine environment. Last but not least, if the fire crisis persists into late August this trip itinerary will be cancelled in favour of a another area conducive to a similar trip. This would likely be closer to home and it anything, less expensive than the above Rockies trip.

On the fun side.
This area is striking and spectacular and if the weather cooperates this will be a trip we are unlikely to ever forget.

Gear required.
Tent, sleeping bag, stove, pots, 50-70L pack, 3/4 shank hiking boots, bear spray, bear bangers, warm clothes, sleeping pad, head lamp, first aid kit, moleskin, etc etc. A more detailed trip list will be circulated in due course.

Costs (preliminary best guess)
Lake Louise Accom Sunday Night.  Approx 50-70 per person.
Camping Fees - 10 dollars a night per person paid at site
Gas costs 80 to 250 depending on car pooling and cars involved  assuming at least 2 people per car.
Food costs. Light weight food is important so cost will vary on diet.
Gondola ride 8am day 1. 45 dollars.
If you assume your food costs come to 100 per head and gas of getting there and back is 150, then all up, we are looking at a net cost person of approx just less than 400 dollars.

This is a 5 day trip so team fit is important.  Please take a moment to answer the questions and provide any extra colour where you can.  Participation will not be based on a first come first serve.
