Post trip update: we did not take the exact route in the image above... you can contact Bill Maurer for the GPS file of our route.
This is a scenic hiking and scrambling route following a long ridge line including two peaks... with a couple of "spicy" exposed 4th Class crux sections. I'm expecting very little snow on the route by the time we go.
Parking:
After making a quick stop at the truck stop restrooms on the north side (near Yak Peak), we'll drive back through the tunnel under the highway and park south of the Coquihalla Zopkios area... in the hiker's parking area just below the salt shed work area.
Timeline:
Meeting... 7:00am, Chevron (Boundary Road near Grandview Hwy)
Driving... about 2.5 hrs from the meeting place to the parking spot.
Hiking... estimations indicate we'll need about 6 hrs car-to-car.
Return... we'll stop for a meal on the way home... be back about 8pm.
Route:
We'll ascend to Markhor Peak, then traverse over to Needle Peak, and then descend via the regular Needle peak trail. I'm hoping one of the group will obtain a GPS track for the route. I've read it could be a bit bushy at the beginning and the trail might be faint. Please note... there will be some exposure along the ridge traverse between the peaks... but most people do not use a harness and rope. Let me know if that might be an issue for you. You may bring a harness and rope if you feel the need.
