This trip is for those who helped or participated in the recent BCMC Intro Mountaineering course. It is expected that a few of the recent graduates will take charge in organizing this trip... with the course instructors helping.
The goal is to summit Mt Slalok (2653m).
Description
Slalok is a glaciated summit above Upper Joffre Lake. The most popular route seems to be up the Stonecrop Glacier. The rocky summit provides pleasant views.
Ascent Routes:
We will do a group decision once we get there, depending on snow condition, weather and group dynamic.
So far, there are 2 routes, I'm considering:
1. NF/Stonecrop Glacier
2. NF of Slalok between Stonecrop Glacier and Glacier Matier.
Stats:
• Distance : Round trip from parking lot (Joffre Lakes) : 20km
• Elevation gain : 1495m
• Time required : 10-12 hours
Schedule:
• Saturday, June 24: Meeting at the Church and drive to Joffre Lakes parking lot. Hike to Upper Joffre Lake. Set up camp and talk about the summit route.
• Sunday, June 25: Alpine wake up (probably 1am). Summit and return to cars.
This trip is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled in case of suspected poor weather. An evaluation will be made a few days prior to departure.
The following is required of all participants:
• Standard glacier equipment: Ice axe, crampons, helmet, snow picket
• Avi gear : beacon, probe, shovel
• Completing the recent BCMC Intro Mountaineering course. Training in glacier travel and crevasse rescue
• Smile and happiness !
• We will need to share tents, ropes and cars.
