Trip Description

Mt Rainier via the Emmons-Winthrop route

Conditions and weather are shaping up for a summit attempt of Mt. Rainier, Washington.

To reach the summit at 14,411 feet above sea level, you will encounter a lack of oxygen, route finding around man-eating crevasses, 30-35 degree glacier slopes, very long days, below freezing temps and wind-chill.

You must have experience:  mountain climbing (PD-) above 10,000 feet, roped glacier travel and self-arrest, winter camping, crevasse rescue training, and avalanche rescue training.

Preference given to Members who have climbed with us before.

We will finalize our dates based on the weather. Probably leaving Thursday night or Friday morning. Ascend to Camp Schurman (9500 feet). Alpine start on Summit day and retreat to Base camp. Pack up and return by Sunday evening. An extra day might be required.

Crossing U.S. border:  you must have valid documents ready ahead of time.

Gear required:  Overnight camping gear and tent, Rope, Harness and gear for glacier travel, General Mountaineering Ice Axe, Crevasse rescue gear (picket, etc.), and your own 10 Essentials.

Organizer will bring GPS with tracks; Map and compass; Personal Locator Beacon; Camera; First aid kit.

More information will be available in the Planning Forum.

Recommended carpooling cost:  please arrange with driver; bring funds.

Emergency Info:  please make sure your Emergency Contact info has been added to your web-account profile.  You can do this by logging into the bcmc.ca website, click on: My Account (top of page)... then click on Edit Emergency Contact (top-left column).  Please re-enter your password to complete the process.  Your emergency contact info is stored *privately* and only made available to those organizing trips *you* choose to attend.

Medical Info:  any info that should be shared with the organizer(s), please send an email and/or phone ASAP.  For example, if you are very allergic to bee/wasp bites, or you are taking medication that could be vital information to First Aid Responders.  Anything you choose to share will remain private.

Cancellation:  We'll check the weather forecast for where we're going the evening before we meet.  If the weather forecast does NOT appear to be adequate for a safe outing then the trip will be cancelled and everyone will be notified by email/telephone.
