Trip Description

Learning to aid climb is the first step to big wall climbing. most of the world's big walls are climbed using aid techniques along the route. Even smaller objectives in Squamish can require a small section of aid (e.g., bolt ladders on the grand wall). In this course, participants will learn to lead basic aid pitches, practice jumarring technique, and haul a haul bag.

This course is taught by Vancouver Mountain Guides (VMG) by a professional ACMG certified guide. VMG is offering a special price for this course for BCMC members of $99 + GST (regular price for non-members: $155 + GST). This course will run with a minimum of 4 participants. (In the event that we only get 2 to 3 participants, the course can still run at a price of $124). Guide: participant ratio is max 1:4.

Prerequisites:
Participants must be able to lead 5.7 trad, and have lead belaying skills, and gear anchor building skills.
Participants are also required to do some homework prior to the course! Practice and review the munter hitch w/ mule knot tie off (video link: https://youtu.be/XkIHoJBzECs)

Gear:
You are required to bring all your usual climbing gear for a day at the crags:
- harness, helmet, belay device, climbing shoes, approach shoes, clothing appropriate for the day
You are encouraged to bring whatever trad or aid gear you have; it's always good to practice on your own gear! If you don't have these items, don't worry - VMG will supply:
- 2 daisy chains, 115cm or 140cm (if 5'10" or taller get the 140cm)
- 2 aiders, minimum 4 steps (u-shaped works best, e.g., Metolius Pocket Aider)
- 2 locking biners
- 2 ascenders w/handles
- micro-traxion (or pro-traxion)
- 2m x 7mm cord
- a backpack that can be "hauled" (30L or more)
- double trad rack of cams and nuts
- extra 10-15 biners
- anchor materials
- climbing rope (minimum 9.8mm x 60m)
