Callaghan has been hammered by a ton of snow lately but there is a little window in the weather tomorrow (Monday). Snow should stop in the early morning and the weather should lift up through the day. It is likely to be very cloudy in the morning and expect mediocre visibility at first but we should see some sun in the mid/late afternoon.
There is now snow on the road and we might not make it to the hut. A 4WD with snow tires and chains is ideal. We will drive as high as we can and skin the rest.
With all the fresh snow, we will stick to conservative lines and most likely will only ski the mellow South side. If the weather really lifts up and the snow is stable, we might also ski the northern bowl, but that is really conditions dependent. So far, the snow has been bounding very nicely there and things have been very stable. But there will be lots of new snow.
If this is your first trip of the season, make sure you test your beacon, batteries, bindings, skins, etc before coming.
***** What to bring:
- Beacon, shovel, probe
- Headlamp: since the afternoon will be the best of the day, if we had to skin/walk up part of the road, we might walk down along the road at dusk
- Clothes to stay in the snow the whole day
- Extra clothes and space blanket as safety
- Food and water
- A little first aid kit
