This course is for groups of six* BCMC members with avalanche training (AST-1 or higher), glacier travel/rescue experience, and overnight backpacking experience looking to enter the world of Ski Mountaineering.  This course is taught by the Canada West Mountain School (CWMS).  Please note this is an overnight trip and location is heavily dependent on conditions; however, it will likely be held in the Whistler/ Blackcomb backcountry.  This trip is open to skiers and splitboarders.  Course date is February 25/26

Base Course Fee: $250 (Special BCMC Members price, includes GST).   Non-Member rate: $325
Possible extra cost: $56 for the lift access fee for Whistler/Blackcomb access (Subject to 2016/2017 Whistler pricing)

Course Objectives: 

• Recognition of hazards specific to winter ski Mountaineering 
• Review of basic rope management techniques (belaying methods, knots, rope coiling, tying-in and double-checking)
• Efficient movement through Alpine terrain in winter conditions on skis
• Movement on steep snow with crampons and ice ax
• Climbing techniques for steep snow and mixed rock/snow/ice
• Ongoing technique coaching and skill development matched to your individual level
• Alpine climbing anchor construction with considerations for winter snowpack variability
• Winter survival tips
• HAVING FUN!!

Requirements:

• Strong skiing ability (should be able to ski black diamond level runs in the backcountry)
• AST-1 or higher
• Glacier travel/ glacier rescue experience
• Overnight backpacking experience

Trip Organizer & Volunteer Instructor Incentive Program:

If you’ve volunteered your time as either:
(a) a Trip Organizer with 4 or more outdoor trips in the past 12 months, you may apply for a 25% rebate off the course fee, or
b) Course Instructor (primary volunteer organizer) in the past 12 months, you may apply for a 50% refund off the course fee.
