From Matt Gunn's Scrambles Book: Both climbs are, "difficult, (with) exposure, routefinding". Not for beginners.
On Saturday, we will hike to Williamson Lake, set up camp and continue onto Welch peak. On Sunday, we will scramble to Foley peak, return to camp, pack up and hike out. Should return before dark on Sunday.
The hike to Williamson lake starts on a well marked trail which enters the forest for a short time and then opens up onto broad open slopes. It hits a rocky creek bed which descends from the lake. We follow this up to the lake. Both Welch and Foley offer spectacular scrambling in a superb alpine setting. "The summit views include Baby Munday, Mount Baker, the Border Peaks, Rexford, Slesse, Robbie Reid and Judge Howay." (Scrambles, Matt Gunn).
Access to the trailhead is best with a 4WD high clearance vehicle. I am driving one and have space for 3 more. You can make it up with a regular car but you will be adding 3.4 km of walking. If this is the case, I can "ferry" the 2nd group up.
