I am planning to ride my touring bike to Smuggler Cove Marine Provincial Park. The plan is to catch the 9:20 am ferry from Horseshoe bay to Langdale on Saturday and ride to Smuggler Cove following the scenic route, i.e. we will only be on the Sunshine Coast highway for a short period of time. The park has a walk-in campground. We will camp at the park for the night, explore the area, and ride back the next morning and try to catch the 2:30 ferry back home. On the way back, we will ride on the highway (the shoulder is OK in this direction).
I will be riding from Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay and back, in case you want to join me too.
This is not a beginner’s trip. You need to be comfortable riding a loaded bike. Pace will be moderate (20 km/h on flat roads). Please make sure that your bike is in good condition and you bring basic tools and spare tubes.
Please email me if interested.
Some key information:
DISTANCE AND ELEVATION GAIN: About 77 km first day and 1100 m cumulative elavation gain. A bit less the second day (subtract about 27 km/day and 350 m elevation gain/day if you start and end at Langdale).
It is mostly rolling hills so it is almost the same cumulative elevation gain on the way back.
PACE: 20 km/h on flat roads
MEETING TIME AND LOCATION: Saturday June 4th at 9 am at Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal (6:45 am somewhere in Vancouver if you want to ride with me along Marine dr to the ferry terminal)
WHAT TO BRING: Bike in good conditions, camping gear, breakfast and dinner to eat at camp, lunch to eat on the road (although we can buy groceries in Sechelt too), bathing suit?
COSTS: Around $19 for ferry (less with BC Experience Card) + money for goodies + money to get to Horseshoe Bay (unless you are cycling from home, then you just need to increase your budget for goodies). I am still trying to figure out the camping fee, if any.
