Day 1: Drive up Saturday morning, set up camp at the lakes, ascend Locomotive & Tender Mtns; possibly Caboose too
Day 2: scramble up Face Mtn. If time, approach Faceless Mtn; return home for hopefully a late dinner (or eat along the way; tbd)
It may make most sense to ascend Locomotive and Tender on the first day, which take about 3 hours from the campsite. Including the short trip (1.5 hrs) to the campsite at the lake, elevation gain on day 1 would be about 1350m, while day two it would be about 1200m. Since the camp is close to the car, some people like to pack in a lot of treats for a more comfortable camp
I plan to bring a helmet, ice axe and crampons; the snow will be soft however it's nice to have on the steeper snow slopes. I was near the area two weeks ago and snowshoes were not needed, however Snowshoes are certainly an option. The weather is variable, so to be safe, prep for some cool temps and even rain, though the forecast is looking better. Saturday looks sunny while Sunday is cloudy with a 60% chance of rain, however less than 1 mm.
I have not explored this specific area before, and have prepped a gps route, however I recommend reviewing the many trip reports available online.
We will likely go in two cars - I recommend $30 per passenger. Meeting a by 7 am at St Davids on Saturday will put us in good shape for day one. Sunday should see us scale Face Mtn and hopefully be home in time for a 6 or 7 pm dinner. Apres hike plans? i'm open - lets see how we feel and what timing is like.
