Trip Description

I have wanted to ride my touring bike from home to Porpoise Bay Park (near Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast) for a while. The forecast for next weekend is great, so let's do it.  The plan is to catch the 9:20 am ferry from Horseshoe bay to Langdale on Saturday and ride to Porpoise Bay following the scenic route, i.e. we will only be on the Sunshine Coast highway for a short period of time. The park has a camping spot for cyclists. We will camp at the park for the night, explore the area, and ride back the next morning and catch the 12:20 pm or 2:30 ferry back home.

I will be riding from Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay and back, in case you want to join me too.

This is not a beginner’s trip. You need to be comfortable riding a loaded bike. Pace will be moderate (18-20 km/h on flat roads). Please make sure that your bike is in good condition and you bring basic tools and spare tubes.

Please email me if interested.

Some key information:

DISTANCE: About 65 km/day (subtract about 27 km/day if you start and end at Langdale) + exploring around Sechelt

CUMULATIVE ELEVATION GAIN: About 350 m for first leg (Vancouver - Horseshoe Bay) and about 450 m for second leg (Langdale - Porpoise Bay) according to Bike with GPS (less according to Google). It is mostly rolling hills so it is almost the same cumulative elevation gain on the way back.

PACE: 18-20 km/h on flat roads

MEETING TIME AND LOCATION: Saturday May the 14th at 9 am at Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal (6:45 am somewhere in Vancouver if you want to ride with me along Marine Dr to the ferry terminal)

WHAT TO BRING: Bike in good conditions, camping gear, breakfast and dinner to eat at camp, lunch to eat on the road (although we can buy groceries in Sechelt too), bathing suit?

COSTS: Around $19 for ferry(less with BC Experience Card) + $15 per campsite (I think a campsite can fit up to 4 people) + money for goodies + money to get to Horseshoe Bay (unless you are cycling from home, then you just need to increase your budget for goodies)
