We'll drive as far as we can up the Alpen Spur road, then ski to the top of Alpen. If we have time, we can continue along the ridge to Split peak or ski laps.
Please conduct your own research into the route, and compare that with your own experience, fitness level and skill.
Gear required: Avalanche gear (Transceiver, Probe, Shovel), AT, tele, or splitboard Equipment, Headlamp suitable for skiing.
Welcome additional gear: GPS, PLB, camera, first aid kit.
Recommended carpooling cost: approx. $15 per passenger; please arrange with driver; bring funds.
I have not been to Alpen before, so I don't know the condition of the Alpen Spur Road. Winter tires and chains are a good idea. The most recent information on bivouac, from November, says, "Managed to get a pair of AWDs to the major fork around 7.5km where there is plenty of parking. The waterbars in the last km or so have pronounce berms on the downhill side. There was some scraping but nothing serious. There are numerous places to park along the road. A satellite image is very helpful in determining which forks to take (the iMapBC 1:20000 road information misses some major spurs)."
